Ever dreaded how long a website was going to take to load or had your browser hang up on some bells and whistles a site tried to load? Or maybe you just want the answer to a simple question and know you don’t need anything more than text to get it? If so then here is a solution that lets you browse the web with browser that only shows text and links. Here is a screenshot of Google’s search results:

To click on links just press the up or down arrow keys till your link is red then hit enter.

But how do you search for something?… Well lets do that step by step… first press the g key and enter in google.com and hit enter. Press “A” to accept the cookie. ( you can turn that off in the options )… Now press the down key until you get to the long line in the middle…. this is the search input field… see where I have typed in “phuket gazette”? …. that is the search input field. Type something in there and hit enter two times.

Below is a shot of the google results…I pressed the down key until the first result turned red and then hit enter to open up the gazette site.

So below is a shot of the Phuket Gazette newspaper homepage.

Here is what an article looks like… I don’t know how to make the screen bigger.

Below is where I found out that you can’t open up secure pages with this browser…so this means no facebook.

But as you can see below Twitter works great! ( can’t login to post tweets though )

After you have visited a few pages hit the Backspace key to show a list of recently visited pages like below:

To download this app visit this site: http://www.vordweb.co.uk/standards/download_lynx.htm , extract the zip file to your C: drive and then click on the LYNX.bat file to launch the browser. It will open up the google homepage  by default and ask you if you want to accept cookies. Press capital A to suppress it. Then go into the options to disable the cookies prompt.  Save the changes and press g to start browsing!
