Just wanted to post a photo of what I am missing when I’m not living in Bali.

Other news: Tawan has homework, Thailand is having more political problems, was doing some research on Hillary’s RFK statement and discovered this guy Farrakhan, gold is back up to 900 something, went to Karon yesterday with my family and Chris’s family, built a bunch of sand castles and tunnels on the beach, pulled Tawan around on the boogie board, had a mediocre surf this evening however bumped into “talk a lot” Mark who is just back from a trip to the states, time to get to work.

Recently installed software:
Add Muncher: I ended up purchasing the software for 30 bucks after being satisfied with its advertisement blocking capabilities. Lots of webpages load faster, there are no surprise sneaky advertisements, and no music ever starts playing out of nowhere. It is also a power thing; it’s just nice to know that I can turn off everything if I want to.

System safety Monitor: this is an “hips” type of software that helps to protect your system from viruses, Trojans, intrusions, root kits, worms,… I ran it for about a month on the trial and ended up buying it. $40 or so. There might be better out there… but I finally got sick of doing the research and just got this one.

Fling: Jeremy, you might like this one. I wrote about it a month or so ago on this blog; just look into the geeky stuff section for the article.

Google Earth: I finally installed this because I wanted to make some fly through movies of the San Juan Islands… I plan on using the fly through video along with phone interviews in some promotional YouTube videos on working on.

Faroo P2P search engine; I had to uninstall this one because of a problem with a changing the resolution of my screen; I will wait a couple months and see if the new version still has the same problems.

SuperMemo clone: I have been using flashcards to take notes on the books I’m reading; I find that I get much more out of my reading if I review my notes every now and then. Flashcards are a great way to manage this process. The software SuperMemo is just a computerized version of flash cards with a little bit of artificial intelligence built-in to maximize your memory potential. If you don’t want to forget things you might want to check it out. My only problem now is I have several hundred flashcards in physical form that I’d like to get into my computer… I’m not really looking forward to the boring process of loading it up. I wonder if I will ever get around to doing it.

Last day surfing at Balangan

I’m back in Bangkok now logging in from Starbucks eating mooncake and mango shakes. Darcy from www.dreamdeliver.com emailed me these shots of myself at Balangan a few days ago. Can’t wait to get back there again next year. Darcy shows up daily at all the surf breaks in his inflatable dingy with his cameras. You can buy his photos for $10 U.S. and he will email you the high resolution version.

Caught some excellent waves at impossibles.

Watched Quentin Tarantino’s “Hostel” and thought it was pretty worthless. Kill Bill was much better.

How to get to Nusa Lembongan from Sanur in Bali Indonesia

We took the ferry from Sanur. It was 140,000 rupiah for a round-trip ticket. The boat leaves from the beach just east of Dunkin’ Donuts and KFC. When you’re heading on the main highway going north through Sanur take the right when you see Dunkin’ Donuts. This intersection is the next intersection after McDonald’s. The beach is just 200 m down the road. You can buy your ferry tickets here. There are two ferries leaving from here; the public ferry and the tourist ferry. The public ferry is only 50,000 rupiah one-way but this boat is usually overcrowded with locals who smell bad and are throwing up nonstop because of seasickness. The tourist ferry is referred to as “Perama”. This ferry is not overcrowded, has more comfortable chairs, and has far less people throwing up over the side. There was only one lady who ended up getting sick out of 25 or so people. And on the way back nobody got sick.

It takes about one hour to get to Nusa Lembongan from Sanur. The ferry ride is not rough because the ferry has outrigger pontoons to keep the boat steady. If the weather is clear you will be able to see both volcanoes. On super clear days Lombok is visible to the east. As the ferry travels northeast along the shoreline the black sand beaches of Keremas are also visible. I guess there are a couple good surfing spots around Keremas but I have yet to check them out. One of the few waves in Bali that goes right.

Once you arrive Nusa Lembongan the ferry will have to negotiate its way through the reef and seaweed farms before dropping you off on the beach. Upon arrival there will be touts offering you accommodation and to carry your bags. I usually ignore everybody and make sure they aren’t following me while checking out the bungalows and guest houses that line the beach.

Nusa Lembongan for the weekend

We just arrived Nusa Lembongan. It is 3 p.m. on Friday. I reserved the three rooms on the beach at Linda’s bungalows this morning. Around nine dollars per night; not bad at all. Especially when you consider that there is a perfect surf spot just off my front door step. In fact I am looking at it now. Lacerations to my left. And shipwrecks to the right. We reserved the room number two; it has the best view of the lot. On the horizon in the distance is Sanur. Just over the rooftops to the right on the horizon are two active volcanoes hidden behind the clouds. I’m hoping they will show themselves tonight or tomorrow morning. The water in front of the hotel is no more than 3 feet deep. It gets no deeper than 3 feet until you get beyond the reef roughly 250 yards out. Where the waves meet the reef is where the surfing gets good. The locals of Nusa Lembongan Farm seaweed from the shallows surrounding the island. It is exported and used in the cosmetics industry. I’m not sure if this seaweed is sushi grade. May, grandma, and Tawan are in room number five taking a cat nap. Upon arrival John quickly consumed a plate of fried rice and then he was off on his four-hour dive trip. A two tank dive for around 50 US dollars.

I should have a chance to catch some waves around 4:30 p.m. when the tide drops. Right now I have some urgent business to take care of for Johannes. I saw an Internet café down the way a little bit; hopefully I will be able to connect and post as well as upload the changes to his sea kayaking website.

This would not be a bad place to work from for a month or two. Not much to do besides work, surf, and stare at the beautiful view.

The big yellow catamaran just departed; it is heading back over to Benoa harbor. Evidently the Japanese pay big bucks for the tour. When the catamaran arrives it hooks up with this massive wharf complete with a water slide, restaurants, and trampolines. I suppose that it could be fun.

I can see where they have planted the seaweed; it shows up as a deep green color whereas the areas not yet planted or recently harvested are very light green. When the tide goes down you can see the wooden stakes surrounding each plot. It is common knowledge among the locals not to impale your self on these stakes while surfing.

There doesn’t seem to be a power outlet out here; when are those scientists going to invent wireless electricity?

I think I will take a cat nap as well; talk to you on the other side.
