Today I followed these instructions http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Host_a_subdomain_on_DreamHost_when_DNS_is_controlled_elsewhere

to setup a wordpress blog ( Custom install NOT simple install ) on a subdomain of a site not hosted with dreamhost. The domain is hosted with a windows host where I don’t want to encounter problems with wordpress ( like I did on verio ). All my wordpress blogs run fine on dreamhost and the setup is fast and simple so I’m sticking with what works.

So I followed those instructions and used the one-click install tool to install it. I chose the “Custom Install” option because I want full control of customizing wordpress themes and files. Customizing is not allowed for “Simple Installs.”

All went smoothly!

Next I used webftp to login and delete all the extra themes, installed wp-time machine ( backs up db and blog to amazon s3 ), and started styling the blog using stylizer.  I chose the “Toolbox” theme by Automatic.
