Dumbing down Washington State

I found this article over at http://www.libertylive.org/blog_main/index.php .  My math skills are also terrible.  How are yours? The following open letter was signed by 60 members of UW's math, science and engineering faculty and sent to state legislators on February 26:   "We the undersigned faculty in math, science and engineering at the University of Washington have become increasingly concerned about the declining level of math competency of students entering the university.  Many students arrive with poor mastery of essential mathematical skills, such as algebra, manipulation of fractions, trigonometry, and basic mathematical operations.   Increasing numbers of students are forced to take math remediation courses after admission to the UW.  Over the past decade many of us have lowered the mathematical levels [...]

Of course the people don’t want war.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." -- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

Stiglitz: $3 TRILLION Iraq legacy to hit next President

Stiglitz: $3tn Iraq legacy to hit next PresidentBy Emma Thelwell The Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz has warned that America's next President will inherit the largest ever budget deficit as the cost of the conflict in Iraq escalates.   The former chief economist of the World Bank, who co-wrote the new book The Three Trillion Dollar War, argues that President George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq has cost just that. Mr Stiglitz and co-author, Harvard lecturer Linda Bilmes, also claim that the government has covered up the financial and human cost of the war. In an interview with Telegraph TV, Mr Stiglitz estimates that the conflict will cost a further $500bn over the next 2 years. The war has fed [...]

The FBI’s “Most Wanted Terrorists” web page does not state that Bin Laden is wanted for the September 11

by Enver Masud The FBI's "Most Wanted Terrorists" web page does not state that Bin Laden is wanted for the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The FBI page states: "Usama Bin Laden is wanted in connection with the August 7, 1998, bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. These attacks killed over 200 people. In addition, Bin Laden is a suspect in other terrorist attacks throughout the world." When asked why there is no mention of 9/11 on the FBI's web page, Rex Tomb, the FBI's Chief of Investigative Publicity, is reported to have said, "The reason why 9/11 is not mentioned on Usama Bin Laden's [...]

Google makes a simple business decision; lie by omission to make money.

If you do an image search on Google China for "Tiananmen Square" you receive this information: http://images.google.cn/images?hl=zh-CN&ie=UTF-8&q=Tiananmen+Square&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi If you do an image search on Google America for "Tiananmen Square" you receive this information: http://images.google.com/images?q=Tiananmen+Square&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi&oi=property_suggestions&resnum=0&ct=property-revision&cd=1 I guess we can't really blame them for wanting to make millions of dollars off of the Chinese population; I mean they are just a business trying to do business in another country.  However we should pay attention to what this says about the business ethics of Google.  They will happily lie by omission to billions of people and get paid handsomely for doing it. Let us not have any illusions about the way our "information sources" make their business and ethical decisions.  They will happily [...]
